The Greatest Match From Every WWE SummerSlam Ever

17. 2003 - Kurt Angle Vs. Brock Lesnar

These two perfectly matched, legitimate athletes were coming off the back of a WrestleMania main event, where a great match was slightly tarnished by Angle’s pre-existing neck injury, and Lesnar’s decision to give himself one by botching a shooting star press.

Their renewal of hostilities at SummerSlam isn’t quite so incident filled, but Angle and Lesnar together is always a recipe for high quality wrestling. The two trade suplexes and throws, hurling each other around the ring with abandon. Lesnar is in his natural nasty heel position here, choking and stomping Angle.

Vince McMahon, a Lesnar backer at the time, inserts himself into the match, socking Angle with a chair in a bit of overbooking this didn’t really need. Ultimately Angle makes Lesnar submit to the ankle lock, which seems crazy given the modern booking of Brock, but the fear factor of Angle at this time makes it work.

The pair would have their epic SmackDown Iron Man match a month later, which might be the highlight of their feud, but really every time they locked horns you were onto a winner.
