The Greatest Match From Every WWE SummerSlam Ever
8. 2012 - Chris Jericho Vs. Dolph Ziggler
The build to this match revolved around whether or not Chris Jericho still had what it takes to perform at the highest level. Eight years and no shortage of reinventions later, the very idea that Y2J was past it seems more ridiculous than ever, but Ziggler was an ideal opponent for this particular angle.
The Show Off was holding the Money In The Bank briefcase here and was not far off his euphoric cash in, but he still had a lot to prove, and in locking up with an opponent of Jericho’s quality, he did just that.
The two are absolute workhorses, putting on a super slick match with some smart psychology - Jericho’s taped ribs (“soft and tender” per Michael Cole) are worked over throughout. The final few minutes especially are thrilling, with Jericho pulling off one of the finest late kickouts you’ll ever see.
Jericho gets the win with the lion tamer - a slightly questionable decision given Ziggler’s possession of the MITB contract. The notion that Y2J’s in ring career was coming to a close was laughable at the time, but this should have put a close to any doubts.
