The Greatest Match From Every WWE WrestleMania

25. WrestleMania XI: Diesel Vs Shawn Michaels

This has something no other match can boast - a special guest timekeeper in the form of the kid from Home Improvements (“a fine young man” per Vince McMahon). A seriously flawed WrestleMania, its crowning achievement is pushing Shawn Michaels as a bonafide main eventer. He steps up to the plate, and quickly leaves the rest of the roster in his dust.

The match itself is perfectly serviceable. Its flaw is that the heel, Michaels, is almost a foot shorter than face champ Diesel, but Michaels’ in-ring chops mean he is seldom the underdog even when giving up as much size as this. The two work a solid if unsurprising match.

More to the point, Michaels’ clear star quality would lead to a shift around over the following year. He was essentially always great, but from here he would take his game to another level. The success would famously go to his head, but from an in-ring perspective, Michaels (alongside Bret Hart) would elevate the product.

It’s also worth watching for Jerry Lawler’s egregious commentary. Sitting close to Jenny McCarthy and Pamela Anderson, the old letch simply can’t contain himself. The fact that he shares a desk with the boss doesn’t stop him, either.
