The Greatest Match From Every WWE WrestleMania

16. WrestleMania XX: Chris Benoit Vs Shawn Michaels Vs Triple H

This is, it goes without saying, a difficult match to watch in retrospect. The final days of Chris Benoit’s life far outweigh everything that came before them, and turn a triumphant moment into something uncomfortable.

To judge the match on its own merits, though, the climax of Wrestlemania XX is something extraordinary. Pitted against two legendary superstars in Triple H and Shawn Michaels, Benoit is the underdog, but he never allows himself to be portrayed as such, He prowls the ring with terrifying intensity, hurling his A-list opponents around with disdain.

All three men perform at the top of their game, but special praise should go to Triple H, who majorly puts Benoit over when he taps clean in the centre of the ring. The spotlight is completely given over to the Canadian, and we see what it means to him as the bell rings.

The image of Benoit and Eddie Guererro embracing as the confetti falls is well known to wrestling fans. While it’s laced in tragedy now, the moment remains an extraordinary one for two men who, by enormously different means, left us far too soon.
