CM Punk finally turned heel in the summer of 2009, and immediately the man took on a whole new lease of life in the WWE. His babyface run had been bland to say the least, but the turn to the dark side allowed Punk's fantastic talent when it came to character the chance to shine through. It helped that Jeff Hardy was at that time the perfect foil for a newly turned Punk, and the two created magic together.

Punk would have his World Champion heel legs cut out from underneath him by The Undertaker, but some of the work he did with Hardy still stands up to this very day. It was the first chance Punk had received to really work a crowd, and it asked the question as to why he hadn't been a heel from the very beginning.

By claiming to be Hardy's moral superior, Punk was tapping into a very real issue that faced WWE fans at the time. Jeff had become one of the biggest babyfaces in North American professional wrestling, working with his demons to become universally beloved. How could this not irk the morally and ethically pure Punk? This was the moment the wider world woke up to the wonder of CM Punk.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
