The Many Faces Of Goldust Ranked From Worst To Best

10. The American Nightmare

It should be no surprise that Cody Rhodes is using the 'American Nightmare' moniker during his run outside of WWE. Dusty's status as 'The American Dream' is almost the lowest hanging fruit when it comes to heel turns and bad guy moniker potential for the Rhodes family, and it makes perfect sense for the frequently heel Cody to utilise that nickname.

It was Dustin who first used it however, immediately following his abandonment of a particularly interesting character that will be covered shortly. If one had ever wondered just why the son of a performer as charismatic and engaging as Dusty Rhodes had to rely on over-the-top gimmicks to get over, let 'The American Nightmare' Dustin Rhodes show you why.

When portraying himself, Dustin is as vanilla as they come. He is clearly a talented in-ring performer, but there seems to be a disconnect between what he is portraying and the interest of audiences worldwide. This could be put down to the larger than life presence that his father was, or perhaps it is simply Dustin's fate as a gimmick-less pro wrestler.

'The American Nightmare' wasn't the only time Dustin Runnels went without an OTT gimmick, but by 2000 the ship had sailed on such a persona (or lack thereof) getting over.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
