6. The Natural

As mentioned earlier in the feature, when Dustin Runnels plays Dustin Runnels/Rhodes he generally gains slight acknowledgement and a whole lot of yawning. For the first few years of his career there was still hope, as Dustin Rhodes gained a decent amount of success in WCW as 'The Natural'.

Dusty's eldest managed to win tag team gold with Barry Windham but it was his various feuds surrounding his two reigns as WCW United States Champion that really opened the eyes of many to the potential of Dustin Rhodes. Rhodes would have good to great matches with Ricky Steamboat, Rick Rude, Steve Austin, and others with the then-prestigious title on the line.

How different would the career of Dustin Rhodes have been had he not been fired for blading in the much-derided King of the Road match against The Blacktop Bully? 'The Natural' wasn't exactly a gimmick to set the world alight but it most certainly was a solid position for Rhodes at the time, and the man was still considered a performer of great potential.

However, he was fired and subsequently went to WWF - where everything changed.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
