Much like many of his peers, Austin has continued making sporadic WWE appearances since departing as a full-time performer. His contract expired in April 2004, but he appeared at WrestleMania 21 (2005) to hit Carlito and Roddy Piper with a Stunner, and threw a beer bash for the ECW locker-room at One Night Stand 2005.

Austin took Jim Ross’ side in his feud with Jonathan Coachman, and famously stunned current United States President Donald Trump during his rivalry with Vince McMahon. While his appearances have become less frequent in recent years, Austin still pops his head through the door occasionally, and was last seen confronting the League of Nations alongside Shawn Michaels and Mick Foley at WrestleMania 32.

As is always the case with old legends, WWE often use Austin’s appearances to take heat away from current full-time performers, but he always elicits a huge pop. He remains active in the public eye through his Broken Skull Challenge and Redneck Island TV shows, and for running one of the biggest wrestling podcasts around. As far as retiring gracefully without severing his ties with the business goes, Austin has absolutely nailed it.
