The Rock: Every Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

6. Pain & Gain (2013)

Quite possibly the best Michael Bay film ever, Pain and Gain saw him finally moving away from Transformers to deliver the closest thing to a black comedy he's probably ever going to make.

A grimly funny commentary on the American dream, this gorgeously-shot action flick may have some dubious morals, the real-life story being as tragic as it is, but as a movie on its own terms, it's an intoxicatingly stylish romp, with three great central performances from Johnson, Anthony Mackie and Mark Wahlberg.

Though it may end up being too much for some audiences, it's clear that Bay was really trying to deliver something different here, and more often than not, he actually succeeded. With a budget of "only" $26 million, it's basically Bay's version of an art-house satire.

Plus, if you somehow need to be sold further, The Rock grills severed human hands on a barbecue (smell what he's cooking?) and gets his toe shot off.
