The Rock Has Bought The XFL

The Rock, yes, that's right, The Rock, has purchased the XFL.

According to a report from Sportico, Dwayne Johnson and Gerry Cardinale's RedBird Capital put in a $15 million bid for the failed football league prior to an auction for its sale began.

Commenting after the acquisition, The Rock said:

"The acquisition of the XFL with my talented partners, Danny Garcia and Gerry Cardinale, is an investment for me that's rooted deeply in two things - my passion for the game and my desire to always take care of the fans. With pride and gratitude for all that I've built with my own two hands, I plan to apply these callouses to the XFL and look forward to creating something special for the players, fans, and everyone involved for the love of football."

Partner Cardinale's business portfolio includes Ligue 1 team Toulouse. He has investments in the NFL and the YES Network.

Vince McMahon's second iteration of the XFL kicked off in January, only to be curtailed five rounds in due to the pandemic. The WWE chairman later filed for bankruptcy.

McMahon had previously attempted to run his own football league back in 2001. The original XFL ended after just a single season, accruing many injuries but little interest along the way. Curiously enough, The Rock was one of the first men to appear on its programming.
