http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nH4fZCT_BA 1998 had seen The Rock go from decent mid-card wrestler to bona-fide star. His promo work had come on in leaps-and-bounds and the heel character had gone over brilliantly with the crowd, even to the point when they were cheering him more than many of the so-called babyface stars. At Survivor Series 98 McMahon had announced a tournament to decide the WWF Champion after both Undertaker and Kane had failed to claim the belt as their own at the previous PPV. Mankind was the Corporate choice and eased through the competition even facing Gilberg in his opening round match but in the final he went one-on-one with the Great One. It seemed like everything was against Rock. When McMahon came down to ringside it appeared as though something wrong was afoot, especially as the Montreal Screwjob had been only the year before. When Rock applied the Sharpshooter, a move he rarely used at the time, McMahon rang for the bell and the Great One was given his first WWF Championship. Rock had come in as the fan favourite and had left as the Corporate Champion. A feud with Mankind was one the cards; one which would cement Rock as a true main event level Champion.
