The much-ridiculed Invasion storyline was in full flow by the time the Biggest Party of the Summer came around in 2001. SummerSlam 2001 lives long in the memory, not least because the theme song was Drowning Pool’s ‘Bodies’, undoubtedly the most professional wrestling song to ever be recorded. The main event of that show saw The Rock challenge Booker T for the WCW Heavyweight Championship, and regrettably a lot of the story revolved around who was more electrifying.

Booker T should have won this match, without a doubt. These were the battles the Alliance needed to win. Despite being the challenger The Rock enters last to a big Rocky pop, and the match is the usual Rock/Booker T bout. This was The Rock’s first PPV appearance since WrestleMania X-Seven, and he starts fast, neutering the potential influence of Shane McMahon in the process.

The match is as full of shenanigans as one would assume, with Bradshaw getting involved and Shane taking both a Clothesline From Hell and a Rock Bottom on the outside. Booker gets a little too cocky and Spinaroonie’s himself into a Rock Bottom, giving Rocky his first ever WCW Championship win.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
