The 1999 Royal Rumble was an interesting night. It was the night that saw the arrival of the glorious ‘No Chance In Hell’ theme for Mr. McMahon, but the Royal Rumble match itself became something of a sideshow as the Austin/McMahon story engulfed everything in it. The WWF Championship was also on the line that night, in a match that would end up being every bit as controversial as any that The Rock would be involved in in his illustrious career.

This was the famous ‘I Quit’ match between Rocky and Mankind, as the two continued to pass the WWF Championship between each other. It was such a jarring match to watch as a fan, a match that took brutality in the company to new heights/lows. Rocky would handcuff Mankind’s hands behind his back and proceed to blast the Deranged One with chair shot after chair shot to the head. Even without the knowledge of Mankind’s family’s reaction, it is hard to watch.

The Rock would pick up the win over a practically dead Mankind via shenanigans. The method of winning the title wasn’t exactly great, but the match itself has become somewhat iconic over the years.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
