The Undertaker's 10 Greatest Feuds Of His WWE Career
10. Vs. Mankind - Buried Alive/Rebirth
By 1996, Undertaker had been in numerous feuds already. He'd slain giants, he'd beaten back fighting machines, he'd even gazed into his own reflection, and he had always come out on top. One could easily think he was the inspiration for Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping," as he would get knocked down, but he'd get up again, and they were never gonna keep him down. In 1996, though, that all changed as Undertaker encountered an opponent the likes of which he'd never faced before in Mankind. As the announcers would have you believe, Mankind was a "sick, deranged" individual with no regard for his own well-being, enduring tremendous pain so long as it allowed him to put a foe down. Whereas it was questioned if Undertaker could feel any pain at all, he was now met with a being who seemingly thrived on it. Their feud lasted throughout most of the year following WrestleMania XII, and appeared as though it would culminate at SummerSlam in a Boiler Room Brawl.. Despite Mankind possessing the home field advantage, lying in wait for the Undertaker to enter his sanctum, the Dead Man was poised to come out on top- that is, until a betrayal by his friend and manager Paul Bearer. One smash of the Undertaker's urn down upon his own head later, and Mankind was the victor, with Undertaker in the worst shape anyone had seen him in since his debut. What appeared to be Undertaker's last stand would come at In Your House: Buried Alive, named for the match that the two would engage in. Undertaker would win the battle, but lose the war as numerous heels from the locker room joined with Paul Bearer's new protege, The Executioner, to bury Undertaker alive. After the burial, lightning struck the grave, signaling that Undertaker would indeed return. Return he did at Survivor Series, but it was not the same Undertaker fans knew. Descending into the arena upon large wings not unlike that of a giant bat or gargoyle, Undertaker had a new appearance signifying a rebirth of his character, one better poised to take on the challenges of the oncoming Attitude Era, and he began by finally conquering Mankind decisively. Undertaker's victory was to allow him to finally get his hands on Paul Bearer, but like a rotund gothic Dr. Wily, he managed to get away so he could challenge his former ally another day.
