The WORST Moment From EVERY WWE SummerSlam

It sounds weird with the benefit of hindsight, but SummerSlam 1989 was pretty much a hype vehicle for the 'No Holds Barred' movie that McMahon, Hulk Hogan and his WWF marketing machine planned to push hard. They viewed it as a way into Hollywood for further projects, and that meant shoving the film's stars in front of federation fans too.

Tommy 'Tiny' Lister was brought in as his Zeus character from the flick, and he teamed with Randy Savage to take on Hogan and Brutus 'Barber' Beefcake on the second 'Slam. Being fair, Zeus tried his best in the role, but he was woefully ill-equipped to work in the main event of a top tier WWF pay-per-view, and that became obvious straight away despite rumoured grand plans.

Hulk and Beefcake vs. Savage and Zeus was an odd choice to go on last (it only did so because Hogan was involved, let's be honest!), and it turned out to be way worse than the prior year’s tag headliner pitting Hulk and Randy vs. Ted DiBiase and Andre The Giant.

Confusingly, Hogan didn't really bring up his own character Rip Thomas during the build towards SummerSlam. That would've been a step too far even for Vince. He didn't want his top draw to sit on the sidelines for some silver screen alter ego, and that was that.

SummerSlam '89's headliner can be summed up as a swing and a miss. The WWF was creeping towards a new decade and keen to create fresh stars, but Zeus was realistically never going to be one of them even if he had believable size.
