The Worst Year Of Triple H's WWE Career

SummerSlam 2003 Elimination Chamber Triple H Goldberg
WWE Network

It's not about the game or how you play it. But it is about control and if you can take it.

This little Trips down memory lane has been fun, but it's been put off long enough. Put on the back-burner, as it is any time people are paid to celebrate the life and the career of 'The Game'. And here's the thing - Hunter's such a 'Cerebral Assassin' that 2003's probably his favourite year. It's the fanbase at large left picking up the pieces.

In 2003, he carried the first love of his life until September and married the second in October. The latter saw him become part of the McMahon family business after nine exhausting months chasing customers away. For more than just family ties, he had a bit of control - it didn't appear as if anybody could perform the duty. He was, as usual, he's the paradox, the conflict, the grey area in a company that possibly wouldn't be able to function without one.

In January and February he mercilessly exposed Scott Steiner's injuries (along with the obscured flaws in his act) in two abysmal matches he was never destined to suffer the ramifications of. WrestleMania XIX is brought up all the time and it should be brought up more - the racist went over. Booker T didn't get his rematch, because a six-man tag at Backlash was used to transition 'The Game' into a three-pay-per-view series of absolute stinkers with Kevin Nash and that Big Sexy b*stard is one of your writer's favourite wrestlers ever. He unmasked Kane less than a year after beating him in the feud where he pretended to f*ck dummy full of spag bol dressed as him. After seemingly putting off putting over Goldberg enough, he put it off some more with a SummerSlam 03 Elimination Chamber victory over the former WCW World Champion in their first meeting. Because that's exactly how the Atlanta outfit booked him during his original outing with Hulk Hogan in 1998.

Think about that. When what's considered one of WCW's bigger misfires is held up as the example of how to do something well, you know you've well and truly Pedigreed all hope. A break for the aforementioned nuptials saw Hunter back for another brutally boring battle with Goldberg at the Survivor Series before taking his vanity belt back to end the year on a high. In f*cking opposite land.
