Those Times Wrestlers Dodged Career-Killing Bullets
4. Chris Jericho Is Sure He'd Have Been The Goon Had He Joined WWE In The Mid-90s
Though he would obviously end up making a splash in the land of sports entertainment just before the end of the '90s, Chris Jericho was actually offered the chance to sign with WWE before that famous 'Y2J' arrival.
In the wake of working in Japan, Mexico, and Extreme Championship Wrestling, and Smoky Mountain Wrestling, Jericho received a call from Jim Cornette in 1996. Here he was pitched the idea of being one of five "enhancement guys" who were definitely "not jobbers" - they had gimmicks, you see.
Jericho soon decided that likely wasn't the move for him at that point in his career and ended up working in World Championship Wrestling before eventually arriving in WWE as a potential main event star.
But what if he had jumped at the chance to join the company a few years earlier?
Well, according to Jericho himself, he feels he would have ended up in the role of The Goon that eventually went to Bill Irwin - a hockey player character who would debut in July 1996... and be gone by March 1997.
So, there you have it. The bloke who famously said he would "save" WWE saved himself from a career-killing spell in the gloves and skates.
