TNA's 10 Biggest Mistakes Of 2016
1. Turning Drew Galloway Heel
Virtually all of the most successful wrestling promotions throughout history have had a top babyface that the company could build around.
WWE has expertly done this for years by moving from one star to the next like Bruno to Backlund, to Hogan, to Hart, to Michaels, to Austin, to Hart, to Cena, to Reigns...wait, scratch that last one. TNA has never really attempted that, and it’s one of the few tropes that they really should steal.
Samoa Joe and A.J. Styles felt more like actors in a supporting cast than they did main players. And former big names like Rob Van Dam and Sting just weren't over enough to carry the promotion. While Drew Galloway may not have been that guy for the long haul, they never gave him much of a chance.
Galloway is likable, he's good in the ring, he cuts great babyface promos and he has the support of the fans. TNA should have built the promotion around him for a year, and had one heel after the next coming after him. But when Damien Sandow came in as Aron Rex, it felt like Galloway was turned just so the newcomer would have someone to feud with at Bound for Glory.
And while Drew may be fine in this role, I just can't imagine how it will be worth it. Jeff and Matt Hardy are over with the crowd, but are too bizarre for the casual fan to latch onto, and they've also been around since the late '90s. Rex's best work has been as a heel, and he doesn't seem like a natural face. And while EC III is good, he doesn't seem like someone you can build around.
Sure, they can turn Drew back, but it will take a lot of time for him to regain his momentum and trust with the fans. Hopefully choosing Rex over him was worth it, as he was their best shot at a true top hero since Styles and Joe at their peak.
