The Rock's 14 Greatest Moments Since His 2011 Return

9. A History Making Announcement

On the Raw immediately following Wrestlemania 27, John Cena formally challenged the Great One to a straight up one-on-one match. Never before had the Wrestlemania main event been announced publicly a whole year in advance, and many wondered if their promise would actually be held up in the long run. After all, Cena would still be around full-time and could get injured before the event came around, whereas Rock's movie schedule was still incredibly busy despite his re-affiliation with WWE and any last minute movie deals could've thrown everything up in the air. There was also some slight unrest amongst the Atlanta crowd as they set the date, for perhaps they were slightly annoyed that their own Wrestlemania had already become an afterthought just 24 hours after it had taken place. After all, Rock/Cena was the real main event people wanted to see, why didn't they get that instead of Cena/Miz? There would even be animosity from the locker-room, with several full-time WWE stars complaining that they were more deserving of a Wrestlemania main event spot than someone who only showed up sporadically. Still, it was a huge moment that ultimately holds up, as they certainly fulfilled their promise down the line. Publicly announcing the main event of the grandaddy of 'em all a whole year prior hadn't been done before, hasn't been done since and probably won't be done again for a long, long time to come.
