UFC 249 Preview And Prediction

1. Tony Ferguson Vs. Justin Gaethje

While there isn't a title on the line for this bout, there might as well be as it has a direct effect on the future of the division. If Tony Ferguson wins, then we continue down the long, obstacle filled path leading us to the seemingly cursed match-up with lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, if Justin Gaethje wins and successfully plays the spoiler, then we have an entirely new set of fight options available to us.

Many people are leaning towards Ferguson and they're very smart too. He's got all the tools to be considered the best lightweight on the planet. Not only does he do the basics extremely well, he's also able to add a creativity to his fight style that makes him exceptionally unpredictable. The only thing that's consistent with Ferguson's opponents is that they look like a mess afterwards.

While he's deservedly the favourite, it's interesting to see that so many people are counting out Gaethje. To the uneducated, the former World Series of Fighting champion is wild brawler who swings for the fences. However, if you catch the subtle nuances of his violence you'll realise that how calculated and methodical he is with his approach. He truly is a tremendous threat to Ferguson and to take him lightly would be foolish.

With both men flourishing chaotic situations, it's difficult to pick who will come out on top. However, Ferguson's path to a title fight with Khabib hasn't been stopped yet and we don't think it'll be stopped now.

Ferguson via submission.
