Ups And 2 Downs From WWE NXT (Oct 14)

2. Dex And The Gritty

Another TV main-event for Damien Priest last night, and this time he was defending his North American Championship against Dexter Lumis. Very much the brand's Flavours of the Month from Autumn and Summer respectively, facing off in a 'This Won't Win A Ratings War' derby.

That might be overly cynical and, in the context of the quality of the match, probably overly so, but if you'd have told NXT fans that this would be the sort of main event they'd have to expect a year into the show's TV run there would have been... some questions.

However despite all of that, the show's greatest failure these past 12 months has been its inability to produce new stars and, sink or swim, there is no other way to do that than to give guys like Lumis and Priest these slots. The match was solid, if unspectacular, and it does increase both their standings on this show. You can't really ask for a whole lot more than that.

As an aside, two lads of this size wrestling, with those haircuts, and in jeans had more than a whiff of "did you spill my pint?!" at some heated backstage party at Download Festival. The broadcast having to mute Lumis screaming "F**K!!!!" also a major highlight of TV this year.
