Why WWE Needs To Take The Biggest Risk EVER

Drew McIntyre CM Punk
WWE

The Rock “bloodied” Cody Rhodes outside of the arena with the rain lashing down, warning him against f*cking with the “Final Boss”. He beat the piss out of him. Blood. Swearing. An incredible visual. This was a classic territory angle with a Blade Runner aesthetic - a beautiful irony of how pro wrestling is much better “cinema” than sports entertainment.

In an absolutely unhinged segment, one that was only loosely agreed-upon, CM Punk jumped down the throat of Drew McIntyre every time he tried to utter a word. It was incredible. It was ugly, yes. Some of the verbiage was vile. But as pure anything can happen on live television goes, it was relentlessly gripping. Punk, who has previous form descending into a vile mood when he’s on the shelf, was irritable. Was he rattled by Drew’s Being The Elite-style bid to build interest in their eventual match on X? That can’t be: Punk doesn’t spend his waking hours chronically addicted to the internet!

When Drew brought up that he was the Chosen One, Punk snapped. He invoked the man who cannot be named, sarcastically and indirectly, referring to Vince McMahon as a paragon of virtue. Drew could only smile wryly, his face a combination of awkwardness and pure delight that he’d wound Punk up so thoroughly. Drew was great value in the segment…mostly. At times, his lines and his cadence veered into WWE Comedy. He said he didn’t hate Punk. Punk is his “muse, man!” said Drew in a line reading that was a bit over-the-top. Drew also said to Punk “You complete me”, a typically dated reference to the 1996 film ‘Jerry Maguire’. Punk’s reaction was priceless. Drew was WWEing it, and Punk radiated pure disdain. He was trying to get away from that feel.

He literally rolled his eyes at Drew’s inability to get away from a script he didn't have to read. He simply deadpanned “Boo this man”. Punk then said “Tell them who you paid to see,” and when this failed to spark chants of “CM Punk!”, he lost what remained of his temper.
