How much of this is due to Vince's stubbornness, poor writing from creative or to the new guard's own limitations, we will never know, but the post-Ruthless Aggression generation, bar a few exceptions, never won the trust of the people in charge.
At the start of the decade, WWE embarked on a self-fulfilling vicious cycle by deciding that only past glories had enough mainstream appeal to main event the show (or well, past glories and Roman Reigns). By doing so, they never gave newcomers a proper chance to build an aura of stardom, and what's more, blamed them for it. To paraphrase CM Punk, how did they expect anybody to get f*cking over ?
It's like that well-known joke about finding work goes: you need experience to be hired, but you gotta work to get experience in the first place. It was a similar catch-22 that would doom WM's match quality for close to a decade, because part-timers may have had the aura, but boy oh boy did they not have the skills (anymore). As a result, the first word that comes to mind to characterize WM’s wrestling over the last decade or so is underwhelming...
