Why WWE WrestleMania No Longer Has The Best Matches Of The Year
7. WrestleMania XXVII To WrestleMania 35: Part-Timers Take Over (IV)
The main event of WrestleMania 31 was good booking, but no great match. Sting vs Triple H was at best moderately entertaining. Randy Orton vs Seth Rollins and The Undertaker vs Shane McMahon were one-spot affairs. The Ladder Match from WM32 was very decent, and better than its 'Mania 31 predecessor, but we're still not in match of the year territory. The 33th edition arguably didn’t have a single match above the seven-out-of-ten mark, and its main event was sad in more ways than intended.
WrestleMania 34 was a glimpse of hope though. Even if their match ended being a disappointment, giving Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles 20 minutes while restraining John Cena and The Undertaker to three was indeed the way to go. It was the first time in six years(!) that on WWE’s top platform, its top prize was contested by two full-time wrestlers. The following year, it was again two full-time members of the roster that fought for it, and this time, they delivered – dare we say? – a long awaited WrestleMania classic.
But on the same night, we were also given an agonizing slog by Batista and Triple H (which just had to be one minute longer than Kofi vs Bryan). WrestleMania’s MOTY chances will depend on WWE’s ability to give us more of the former, and less of the later.
