Why WWE WrestleMania No Longer Has The Best Matches Of The Year

13. WrestleMania X-Seven To WrestleMania XX: The Golden Era (II)

The pick of the bunch has to be WrestleMania X-Seven though, rightly considered as the greatest 'Mania of all time.

We're talking about a show that gave us The Undertaker vs Triple H - 'Taker's best ‘Mania showing up until that point - the timeless TLC II, the brutal Vince vs Shane Street Fight, possibly the greatest father against son match in history, as well as the two finest technicians of the time, Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit, going at it for 15 minutes. As if that wasn't enough, the show ended on a grandiose Rock vs Austin finale. That’s five encounters which arguably belong in the year’s top 10, all in one show.

The extreme style inherited from the Attitude Era certainly helped. Out of the 12 matches mentioned previously, all of which easily score four stars or higher, half were contested under extreme stipulations. Needless to say, Hulk Hogan vs Vince McMahon in a regular singles bout would've been horrendous, and a triple threat between The Hardy Boyz, The Dudley Boyz and Edge & Christian wouldn't have been one of the best tag team matches ever without tables, ladders and chairs.
