Will New Day Break Tag Team Record In Title Defence On WWE Raw?
Can The New Day break the record?
If The New Day are still the Raw Tag Team Champions on Saturday, December 17, their reign will have reached 479 days, making them the longest-reigning tag team titleholders of any kind in WWE history. In order to reach that record, though, they'll have to get through a triple-threat match on next week's Raw against The Club and Sheamus and Cesaro.
The match was made on Monday's episode of the show, when the two teams of challengers met in a number one contendership bout with The New Day at ringside. The tandems - both of which have lost numerous title matches to The New Day - put up a fight, but when the match spilled to the outside, the champions were pulled into the fray. As a result, the match was declared a no contest and the triple-threat title contest was signed.
The New Day have been Raw (previously WWE) Tag Team Champions since August 23, 2015, when they won the belts from The Prime Time Players at SummerSlam. Since then, they've defended those titles against challengers ranging from The Usos to Y2AJ to The Vaudevillains. When the WWE's roster was split, The New Day were drafted to Raw and their titles became exclusive to the brand.
This current iteration of the belts dates back to 2002. The New Day has long since surpassed the old record with these titles (331 days, set by Paul London and Brian Kendrick), but it was Demolition who set the record with the WWE World Tag Team Championships, which were in use from 1971 to 2010. They held those belts for 478 days between 1988 and 1989.
