Wrestling’s 10 Biggest Missed Opportunities Of 2023
5. The Failed AEW Trios Championship Experiment
The last thing AEW needed in September 2022 was more gold to fight over.
This is a company that already possessed seven All Elite titles on weekly programming, and a further six Ring of Honor straps whenever Tony Khan felt like promoting an incoming ROH PPV.
But TK was clearly a fan of the idea of giving the numerous gifted trios on his roster something to compete for, outside of the ROH Six-Man Championships. So, the AEW President decided to unleash some All Elite Trios titles, with a tournament being held to decide the two units that would clash over the debuting belts at All Out.
Inevitably, company EVPs The Elite ended up becoming inaugural champs, but the new gold was dealt a pretty catastrophic blow on that very same night. The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega clashing with CM Punk backstage forced Khan to strip all four men of their gold.
And while The Elite's best-of-seven series with The Lucha Bros. certainly had its moments, the titles never properly recovered from that stop-start arrival.
Both The House of Black and The Acclaimed have tried and failed to keep the titles somewhat relevant in 2023. But a lack of edge-of-your-seat bangers or any properly gripping storylines for the belts this year has left these three championships feeling like little more than another collection of unnecessary All Elite accessories.
