WWE: 10 Most Extreme ECW Matches

10. Ian Rotten vs. Axl Rotten -- Hardcore Heaven, July 1, 1995

Let's begin with a blood feast of an extremely personal nature. It was the summer of '95 when the Rotten Brothers, Ian and Axl, had an idea: the first-ever Tapei Death Match -- where taped fists are dipped in superglue, then broken glass, then used to inflict punishment. Formerly known as The Bad Breed, Axl and Ian Rotten "were fighting coming out of their mother's womb," as Paul Heyman would say. And if it's blood the Philadelphia fans want, it's blood they get in this ugly massacre. Oddly, before the match begins, referee Bill Alfonso checks both wrestlers for foreign objects. Making matters more confusing, Alfonso stops the match for bleeding in less than a minute, after Axl lands the first punch and opens a cut over the right eye of Ian. A brawl between The Gangstas and The Public Enemy then ensues in the aisle, that prompts Alfonso to leave the ring and join in the chaos. Moments later, Commissioner Tod Gordon is in the ring telling the fans that Bill Alfonso has left the building. "Let's start the Tapei Death Match!" proclaims Gordon as the bloodthirsty fans erupt. It's a strange start to the match, as another referee is brought in to replace Fonzie. Like a piranha smelling blood, Axl attacks his younger brother before Ian retaliates with some vicious right hands, opening up the head and arm of Axl. Wearing the crimson mask, Axl comes back like a man possessed, digging glass into the head of Ian, until his brother nails him with a low blow. This blood feud all started when Ian turned on Axl, after losing a stipulation match to The Pitbulls, where the losing team "must split up forever." Both wearing white t-shirts, the Rotten brothers resemble Sgt. Slaughter in his infamous Alley Fight against Pat Patterson, where the Sarge's white shirt is gruesomely soaked with his own blood. As the match mercifully comes to an end, Axl, exhausted and dazed, staggers around while Ian brings in a bag of thumbtacks and covers the mat with them. But it's Ian who gets back body-dropped onto hundreds of thumbtacks, as Axl follows up with big splash for the win. The rabid fans chant "Bad Breed!" in appreciation for the extremes these brothers will go to, in this memorably gory, violent, and historic Tapei Death Match.
