WWE: 10 Famous Wrestling Streaks That Had A Botched Ending
2. CM Punk's Title Reigns Hits Rock Bottom
At Raw 1000, The Rock saved John Cena from a beatdown at the hands of Big Show, the reigning WWE Champion C.M. Punk turned heel by attacking Rocky. The next week, Punk explained that he was sick of people like The Rock and John Cena receiving more attention and over-shadowing the champion, specifically him. Around this time he aligned himself with Paul Heyman, and in December of 2012, Punk surpassed Cena's 380-day reign to become the longest-reigning WWE Champion in 25 years. That reign ended at the hands of the very part-timer Punk confronted at the beginning of his highly-successful heel run, The Rock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q_QEIMuGdI The Rock vs. John Cena was going to happen at WrestleMania 28. There was no doubt about that. And since it would be a rematch of their "Once In A Lifetime" match at WrestleMania 27, a title match made it mean that much more. But Punk's reign had only gotten hotter since joining Heyman, and- with the addition of The Sheild to their alliance- his reign could have gone into WrestleMania. Rock/Cena didn't necessarily need the title, and Rock could have "passed the torch" without literally passing the title; as it is, we ultimately got Undertaker/Punk at WrestleMania 29, which would end up being 'Taker's last great match- and possibly victory- on The Grandest Stage of All, so it wasn't all bad.
