Heading into WrestleMania VI, Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake was one of the Top 5 babyfaces in WWF; Mr. Perfect was one of the Top 5- if not the top- heel at the time, boasting of a "perfect" record since he entered WWF a year prior. When Perfect interfered in his partner- The Genius- and Brutus' match at the 1990 Royal Rumble, a match between the two was set for WrestleMania. In the build-up, Beefcake promised to ruin Perfect's perfect record, symbolically cutting his record up with his barber shears in a backstage promo.
