5. Relationship With Vince

The most important aspect of The Undertaker's backstage role has been his relationship with Vince McMahon. Whereas Hogan was Vince's big attraction, Michaels his creative confidant and Austin the game-changer, Undertaker was something different entirely. The relationship is built on respect. Vince has always had a fascination with old school toughness, and Taker was the embodiment of this, showing the personality that Vince wanted his other employees to conduct themselves with. Straight off, Vince started giving Taker reign over the WWE locker room. On screen as well, Undertaker was exactly what Vince wanted €“ big, athletic and confident in a gimmick. Impressed with Undertaker as a man and as a ring general, Vince let his wrestlers know that they should go through Taker for any issues relating to the locker room. Vince had essentially given Undertaker the job of being the union man. As the years turned to decades the working friendship has got even stronger. Vince values loyalty more than anything., and with Undertaker he's seen a quarter of a century of unwavering service. The WWF was closer than most people realize to going out of business in the late 90's. Everyone was jumping ship to the riches of WCW, with even Shawn Michaels even requesting a release at one point. The one big star who stuck with Vince and wouldn't entertain a second thought of WCW was Mark Calaway. Vince doesn't forget things like that. At his most desperate point, The Undertaker was the one man who fully backed Vince. Taker is WWE to the core.
