WWE: 10 Great Wrestlers Held Back By Terrible Gimmicks
3. Paul Burchill
With the right gimmick and the correct feuds Paul Burchill could have been a major star in the WWE; he was an incredible technical wrestler, with an extensive set of moves. However his dreams were never going to be fulfilled dressed as a Pirates of the Caribbean rip-off. Whilst a wrestling pirate was pretty ridiculous in itself, it was the lazy back story of the character that ensured it would not be taken seriously. The WWE sold Burchills pirate as a descendant of Blackbeard, a man whose life ended in the 1500s. Yeah, ok. Perhaps, if we delve far enough into Mark Henrys family tree, well see that the worlds strongest man is actually a long lost relative of Hercules. Shockingly enough the gimmick soon faded away, and Paul was removed from our TV screens. He was repackaged and given a new character a few years later, but that gimmick also failed to go anywhere. What was the problem with his next gimmick? Oh, he only rejoined the brand as a man incestuously in love with his own sister. Poor Burchill never stood a chance.
