WWE: 10 Greatest Moments Of Austin Vs McMahon Feud

8. The Heel Turn

This could have been so much higher on the list. This should have been so much higher on the list. Steve Austin turning heel and aligning himself with the man who he had been feuding with for the previous three-and-a-half years should have been one of the biggest moments in the history of the business. It wasn't. For one, the turn happened in Austin's home state of Texas, so he was getting cheered when he turned, because he won the WWF Title in doing so. It certainly didn't mirror the other game-changing heel turn of the last 20 years, Hulk Hogan turning on WCW to form the nWo. Hogan got jeered and had fans throw so much trash in the ring that it was becoming dangerous to just stand there. Austin was getting cheered as if he had just given everyone in attendance a brand new car. Second, as Austin himself has stated, fans all over the world just weren't ready to boo him. As I said earlier, a strong argument can be made that Austin is the single biggest and most popular performer in the history of the wrestling business. Fans wanted to cheer him, and even after he turned, they continued to do so. It didn't help that Austin's heel character was often portrayed as something of a needy child, always looking for hugs and emotional support from Vince McMahon. A lot of it didn't make any sense. It was still a historic moment, though, as it signaled the end (at the time, anyway) of what many people feel is the greatest feud in wrestling history.
