WWE: 10 Greats Who Never Won The Royal Rumble

7. The Ultimate Warrior

In the last six months The Ultimate Warrior has been written about more than in the last six years put together. His inclusion in WWE 2K14 has seemingly cemented his renewed relationship with the WWE. He is a controversial figure, both in the wrestling industry and outside it. This is not a discussion on Warrior's merits as a wrestler, nor is it a comment on his political ideologies, or even his fractious mental state. What we are discussing is a WWE great who did not win the Rumble, and the Ultimate Warrior definitely falls under this category. One of the few people who could legitimately be said to be on Hulk Hogan's level during the early nineties, there is no doubting the popularity of the Warrior. For all of the Ultimate Warrior's successes in the ring he was never particularly adept in the Royal Rumble. The Warrior was only in two Rumble matches, '88 and '90. He did appear at two other Royal Rumbles, '91 and '80, but never took part in the Rumble match itself. He eliminated 6 people overall, all in '90, but only lasted a total of just over 17 minutes. These are not the most impressive statistics in the world. To put this into context, the Warrior has less eliminations than Big Daddy V (or Viscera, or Mabel, depending on which WWE era you remember best). Despite all that the Warrior could have been a great Rumble winner. He had instant charisma, and huge popularity which would have sent the fans home happy. Batista, who adopted a lot of the mannerisms and demeanour of the Warrior, was a crowd pleasing winner in 2005. Which Royal Rumble could they have won? 1990. The Warrior was on a rocket pack to stardom at this point. His popularity was eclipsing even that of Hulk Hogan, who had been to some extent untouchable at the top of the business in the 80's. If WWE had been handing out title shots for Rumble wins in this period then a win for Warrior in 1990 would have been immense, it would've been a brilliant moment on the journey to the Wrestlemania VI Main Event of Hogan vs Warrior.
