WWE: 10 Little Known Facts About John Cena
7. Cena's Feature-Length Movies Have Grossed Over $40.5 million
While this number may pale in comparison to the box office acumen of other professional-wrestlers-turned-actors, Cena's 4-film money haul is really nothing to be scoffed at. Sure, he hasn't grossed more than $2 billion worldwide like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jesse "The Body" Ventura's $600 million, or even $400 million like Hulk Hogan. However, at an average of $10 million profit per film, there are few producers in Hollywood who would withhold financing for a new Cena cinematic venture that came across their desk. As far as acting is concerned, Cena's $40.5 million gross ranks him 1,074th on the all-time list which makes him, albeit technically, a higher box office draw than Quentin Tarantino.
Making money is certainly not the problem facing John Cena and his career in motion pictures. His four films (The Marine, 12 Rounds, Legendary, and The Reunion) have all been resoundingly and mercilessly skewered by critics. New York Times film critic Stephen Holden described Cena's role as Mike Chetley in WWE Studios' 2011 stinker Legendary as, "a monosyllabic muscle-bound lug with the face of a depressed comic book action hero." Ouch!!
