WWE: 10 Most Show Stealing Chris Jericho Performances
4. Ladder Match For World Heavyweight Championship - Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels (No Mercy 2008)
The best feud of the last ten years was the personal, emotional battle between Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels. Starting as a more basic program that evolved into a heated and violent war, it stretched six months and managed to keep fans invested throughout. That the performers were able to elevate their performance, increase the intensity and aggression with which they clashed with one another only helped enhance the overall quality of the story. By the time they arrived at No Mercy in October 2008, it was clear that their World Heavyweight Championship Ladder match would be the culmination of their feud. The title was essentially secondary to long story between the competitors. In many ways, it was merely a prop, an attempt by WWE Creative to add an unnecessary layer to a program that did not need it. Still, it created an excuse for the future Hall of Famers to compete in a match that both of them had history in. Like Jericho's war with Chris Benoit seven years earlier, the stunts were kept at a minimum while brutality reigned supreme. Jericho was missing teeth, both men bled and well-timed interference from Lance Cade helped Jericho retain the top prize on Monday Night Raw. It is rare for a heel in today's WWE to come out of a main event story victorious but Jericho, thanks to the unselfishness of Michaels, proved the exception. The finish, a tug-o-war over the championship between the two competitors, was one of the more inventive ladder match finishes ever and added great drama to the closing moments.
