From @burninpaperhart: This is a bit of an oldie. Who would you have chosen as Austin's hit & run driver instead of Rikishi, who could have thrived in the role?
If you don't know what he's referring to, it's the angle at Survivor Series 1999 when Steve Austin was hit by a car to take him out of the main event of that show. It was an injury angle done to explain why Austin was going to miss nearly a year of action. In October of 2000, they announced that it was Rikishi (a babyface at the time) that did it. When the Austin/Rikishi feud didn't really work, they tried to put over the idea that evil Triple H put Rikishi up to it. I actually didn't mind that aspect of it because Hunter was an incredible performer especially in that year 2000. My choice would have been Triple H. He was the top heel at the time, so it made sense if it was him. The reason they picked Rikishi was because they need more top heels and a feud with Austin would elevate him, but they made the wrong choice because Rikishi was better being a babyface. I don't think there was a midcard heel that would have worked. None of them were really ready for it. In the end, we got a couple of great Austin/Triple H matches out of the feud including the epic Three Stages of Hell match at No Way Out 2001. It worked out in the long run.
