WWE WrestleMania 30: 10 Reasons The Undertaker Losing The Streak Was A Waste Of 22 Years
9. The Build Was Disappointing
Let's again use Undertaker's matches with Shawn Michaels as an example of doing everything right. Those were promoted as huge showdowns between legendary competitors who wanted nothing more than to beat each other on the Grandest Stage of Them All. The video packages were exciting and helped raise anticipation to a fever pitch. The feud with CM Punk, while somewhat hokey, was still built around a deeply harbored personal grudge. With the lead-up to this match, we were never actually even given a reason why it was happening. Brock was angry because his demands for a title shot had been denied so he had an open contract. The Undertaker apparently just wanted a challenge so he showed up and stabbed The Beast Incarnate in the hand with a pen. Match made. In the following weeks, despite Paul Heyman's best efforts we were never really given much reason to become invested. It just always felt like the match WWE had decided on and they were just going through the motions in promoting it. For a match that was going to mark the end of the streak, it should have been the focus of a much more intense marketing campaign.
