WWE: 10 Rivalries That Were Too Personal To Be Fake

2. Edge And Matt Hardy

The majority of these personal feuds were the cause of one person fighting with another because they were competing for the same spot by trying to prove they were better than the other guy. In the case of Edge and Matt Hardy, their rivalry was based on the affections of WWE Hall of Fame diva Lita. Lita's a gorgeous woman that always got along with people. She was also the girlfriend of Matt Hardy for about six years up until her relationship started with Edge in the early part of 2005. Matt was out with an injury at that point, so she started riding with Edge and started a sexual relationship with him. Matt found out, broke up with her and WWE even fired him. Keep in mind that Edge was one of Matt's best friends at the time too, so not only was his girl cheating on him, but she did it with one her boyfriend's best friends. Hardy returned to WWE three months after being fired and on the July 11, 2005 edition of Raw he went right after Edge. They had paired Lita up with Edge because a lot of fans knew about what really happened, so Edge turned into a heel with Lita by his side. Hardy wasn't shy about telling people what really happened and when he came back, he was as popular as ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sz64vQ7MZwE To WWE's credit, they put this real life situation out there in the ring at a time when the story was really hot. They capitalized on the real emotions of these three performers because they knew that the broken hearted babyface was something their fans could relate to. It made Edge and Lita main event level villains too. They ended up having a big match at SummerSlam 2005 that Edge won in cheap manner and then Hardy won an awesome Steel Cage match at Unforgiven 2005 that was an outstanding effort by both guys. Edge bled, Matt won with a leg drop from the top and the rivalry was over at that point. Edge and Lita didn't last too long as a couple although they were paired together through most of 2006 until Lita retired. Edge would go on to become a WWE Champion for the first time in 2006. It turns out that a real life event ended up benefiting him in a storyline more than anything any writer could come up with. As for Matt, it was the most popular he would be as a singles wrestler. He didn't become a main eventer, but at least he got revenge on the guy that stole his girl. They likely will never be close friends the way they were before Edge got with Lita. At least they were able to be professional enough to work together. There was some doubt about that leading into the feud, but they proved by their actions that they could put the business ahead of any personal issues they had.
