Goldberg was the best thing WCW had going for them at the time. With increased competition from the WWF and its breakout star, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, WCW was willing to catch lightning wherever it could. Goldberg became Nitro's only new guy who ever got a solid push. Like John Cena a few years later, he soon faced a backlash. There were rumours that his undefeated streak numbers had been inflated, as if such a thing were unheard of in a fake sport. After WCW was bought by the WWF, Goldberg attempted a comeback, resulting in the aforementioned sad affair at Wrestlemania XX, his career ending with a stunner from special guest referee Austin. It was yet another dig at WCW, long after the company's death. Goldberg had no indie work or even an NWA territory in which to develop his craft. Had he paid his dues the way someone like Austin had, he probably would have had a more lasting impact on the industry.

I used to do a mean Glenn Danzig impression. Now I just hang around and co-host The Workprint podcast at http://southboundcinema.com/.
