WWE: 10 Steps To Booking Sting For WrestleMania 30 (And Beyond)
9. The Debut
The big problem with debuting Sting at Wrestlemania is who does he face? Undertaker is the obvious choice. Both men have an epic legacy and a shared character dynamic. In terms of ring work it is a very attractive prospect. The problem is, Sting would need far more than a couple of months buildup to be taken seriously as a challenger to the streak. My idea would be to debut Sting at Wrestlemania 30 in a surprise appearance to stare down The Undertaker. I figure that Taker will be facing (and beating) Brock Lesnar at the event. Following this match, with Lesnar having departed, Taker could take the mic - the tease would be a retirement speech. The Deadman could start detailing the 30th anniversary of Wrestlemania as a fitting time for occasion ... but as Taker teases an emotional retirement, the lights go out. A spotlight shines to the rafters, seeing Sting descend. The two icons stare off and that is all that needs to happen. Taker walks away, leaving Sting in the ring. What this does is establish a year long story that can lead to Sting vs Undertaker at Wrestlemania 31. The WWE booked this kind of story with Rock and Cena over a year, and it worked. It is of course a risk for WWE to book Taker a year in advance given his injury susceptibility, but that's fine, a backup plan can always be executed in the worst case scenario. This angle does several things. It brings in Sting in a huge way and establishes a huge match.
