Say what you will about Vince McMahon, but he's usually able to put personal feelings aside and try and do what's best for business. Just one year after WCW closed its doors for good, Eric Bischoff joined WWE as the new Raw General Manager. It was a truly shocking moment in the program's history. Somehow, McMahon forgave his former nemesis for all of his real life past transgressions, which included infamously challenging him to a match at Slamboree 1998. For weeks, Bischoff took countless shots at McMahon in a series of pre-taped promos. He bragged about what a coward his future employer had become. When the event aired, a special Vinnie Mac cam was set up outside just in case he showed up. Of course, he did not. Bischoff enjoyed his count-out victory and gloated about it the next night on Nitro. That alone should have put him on a permanent "do not hire list." But in 2002, with the recent failure of the reformed NWO fresh on the company's mind, WWE needed something new to get fans excited. This is probably what got Bischoff his new job. The two former foes put aside past grudges, and were able to work together amicably. They even enjoyed a friendly hug on the air. Sure, WWE flushed a bunch of money down the toilet by not having the incredibly obvious McMahon vs. Bischoff feud, but the fact that he was brought in at all was a pretty surreal sight.
