WWE: 10 Things We Miss Most About Eddie Guerrero

10. The Grin

eddie guerrero2 Right up there with The Rock€™s raised eyebrow and Mr. McMahon€™s bobbing Adam€™s apple, Eddie Guerrero€™s signature, scythe-like grin was a sign that something truly awesome was about to happen. Usually occurring when the advantage shifted in his direction during a match (more often than not involving a downed referee, or a foreign object, or both), Guerrero€™s grin was a sign to the fans that Eddie was pouncing on an opportunity. He played it to full effect. Once Eddie let loose the grin, he had the crowd eating out of his hand. That wily, knowing smirk was a big factor in Eddie€™s enduring popularity. It made us fans feel like they were in on the act. It was a major reason why Eddie eventually got over despite his brazen (and usually quite shameless) use of traditional €˜heel€™ tactics. Facial expressions are a massively underrated part of wrestling, especially in this era of televised events and Titan Trons. Good facial expressions help to convey character and story to the fans. They allow viewers to engage with character, be it to rage at Randy Orton€™s smugness, or laugh hysterically at the many faces of Yoshihiro Tajiri. Go back and re-watch Guerrero€™s final WWE championship match with Batista. Check out Latino Heat€™s incredible timing as that sly, deceptive grin emerges the moment Batista€™s back is turned...Only to be replaced with sweet, friendly Eddie when €˜The Animal€™ turns around again. Had Guerrero not have passed away when he did, that angle would have made for some exciting, character-driven television, the kind that Eddie Guerrero excelled at. Its not just the grin, however. Go back and watch any Eddie Guerrero entrance and you€™ll see some top-notch facial expressions, as well as some pretty darn good acting. From the unrepentant, chest beating machismo as fan-favourite Latino Heat, to the cold, heartless heel Eddie (a role that he was equally adept at filling), he always looked the part.

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
