WWE: 10 Times The Fans Completely Rejected What They Were Seeing

9. Steve Austin vs. The Rock at WrestleMania 17

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRP8-oJZtP8 I will preface this one by saying if you asked me about my ten favorite wrestling matches ever, this one would probably be on that list. It's not about the quality of the match, though. When Steve Austin won the WWE Title from The Rock at WrestleMania 17, he did so after the interference from his arch nemesis Vince McMahon. He won the match after beating The Rock with about a dozen chairshots because he wasn't able to beat him clean. It was a cheap win for the top babyface in the wrestling business. How did the Houston, Texas (Austin's home state) crowd react to that? A lot of them cheered. They didn't care that he was a heel. They just cheered him for winning the WWE Title and they didn't care how he did it. Austin has said in his book, on his DVDs (there are so many of them) and in countless interviews that he wishes he could have called an audible where they didn't do the turn because of the crowd reaction. By the end of 2001, he was back to being a babyface again. The heel turn was actually a lot of fan, but fans loved Austin too much to boo him that night.
