WWE: 10 Tragedies That Shocked Pro Wrestling

10. Randy Savage (1952-2011)

Randy Savage Randy Savage was my personal favourite wrestler of all time. Brilliant as a heel and as a baby face, Savage possessed a huge amount of charisma and the fans absolutely loved him, even at his most heelish moments - fans cheered him on. His wrestling career was highly successful - Savage held 20 championships in his career, achieving the impressive feat of holding the WWF championship belt twice and also holding the world heavyweight title in the WCW four times. His feuds with Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair were particularly compelling. Savage was married to Elizabeth Hulette - 'Miss Elizabeth' - in 1984. She acted off and on as his valet until they separated in real life in the summer of 1992, a year after they had a fake marriage in SummerSlam 1991. Savage later married his long time girlfriend Barbara Lynn Payne in May 2010. On the 20th May 2011, Savage was driving in Florida with his wife when he suffered a heart attack behind the wheel and crashed into a tree. His wife was unhurt but Savage was dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed Randy had an enlarged heart and was suffering from advanced cardiac disease. He had no prior knowledge or indications of heart disease, and in his system, there was only a small amount of alcohol and prescription painkillers. It took Vince McMahon over a week to respond to Savage's death. The two men had been implacable enemies ever since Savage left the WWE on bad terms in 1994. McMahon paid homage to Randy in Time Magazine, noting his charisma and calling him one of wrestling's all time greats. His brother Lanny 'The Genius' Poffo gave the WWE permission to induct Randy into the WWE Hall of Fame contrary to Savage's own desire that he be inducted into the Hall of Fame simultaneously with his wrestler father Angelo Poffo and his brother Lanny. Savage was a great, accomplished wrestler and he stole the show anytime he appeared on screen. He will surely go down as one of professional wrestling's biggest legends and his premature death robbed the wrestling world of one of its most colourful and popular wrestlers.
