WWE: 12 Most Controversial WrestleMania Moments Ever
12. Rey Mysterio Wins The Heavyweight Championship, Despite Not Being Heavy - WrestleMania 22
Surely something as simple as defining weight classes should be heeded at a big event as illustrious as WrestleMania? Well, not at WrestleMania 22, which ended with the WWE Cruiserweight Champion being heavier than the Heavyweight Champion. Despite the fact that the Triple Threat Heavyweight match was hugely entertaining, there were only ever two men considered possible victors, and neither of them was called Rey Mysterio. The comparatively diminutive high-flyer was expected to merely take up space in the ring opposite Randy Orton and Kurt Angle - the latter of who had the best of the match until the end - but he shrugged off a surprisingly heated audience reaction (with about half of the audience roundly booing him) to emerge victorious. At the time the result felt like no more than a continuation of the sentimentalism that had been creeping into creative decisions, giving an unthinkable underdog an unsuspected victory, and it was hard to take the result as the fitting end to cumulative storylines, not to mention the fact that it has been suggested that Mysterio's victory devalued the belt entirely. In hindsight, the victory feels like it was no more than the opportunity to set up two ridiculous matches between Mysterio and Mark Henry first and then the Great Kahli as part of his feud with JBL. As the final indication of what the WWE really felt about the event, Mysterio's celebration was basically rushed to get to the Pillow Fight that came next on the bill.
