https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwMOtdNnWYY By the time all this came about, Bret Hart had been a loyal servant to the then WWF for over 14 years. In late 1997, Bret had agreed a lucrative deal to take him to the WCW, but at the time he was still reigning champion in the WWF but was due to face Shawn Michaels in one of his final few appearances, at Survivor Series with the belt on the line . Due to a series of real life clashes with Michaels, including Shawn stating that he would never job to Hart, Bret refused to drop the title in his home nation of Canada, where Survivor Series was being held, and insisted he would drop it on T.V. before he left to go to WCW. Vince however, feared that Bret would turn up on WCW television with the crown jewel of the WWF. He concocted a plan to have Earl Hebner call the match when Hart was placed in the Sharpshooter, his own finishing manoeuvre , by Michaels, despite Hart not submitting. Again, just a real classless act by Vince towards one of his longest serving members of the roster, which led to a long standing dispute between Hart and McMahon that was only rectified in 2006 when Bret was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The one positive to take from this whole debacle is that without this, there never would have been the dastardly Mr. McMahon character who would go on to be one of the best authority heels of all time.
