1. Randy Savage vs Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat (WrestleMania III)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nHBtd7qeh0 You weren't supposed to really remember Savage vs Steamboat at Wrestlemania III beyond it being a decent under-card match. In fact, during the build-up to this event, it was kind of just there. Another feud. In typical Vince McMahon fashion, Roddy Piper vs Adrian Adonis in a Hair vs Hair match seemed to garner more airtime and publicity that Savage-Steamboat. It wasn't that either man wasn't high on Vince's list, so to speak- as we all know, Savage would go on to win the top strap in the game but a year later- but it was more that Wrestlemania, as Vince himself has said before, is an attraction based business and back in 1987, the attraction of WWE and Wrestlemania lay in the blockbusting mainstream appeal of Hogan v Andre and the general larger than life hyperbole. In as much, just as the Ladder Match from 'Mania X proved to be the genesis of a new wave of wrestling in WWE, Savage vs Steamboat from 'Mania III proved to be the genesis of wrestling itself, within WWE. It's for that reason this match has become truly historic, far beyond what it was ever expected it could be. Before Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Mr. Perfect, Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit and anyone else found a way to set Wrestlemania alight with genuinely brilliant in-ring action, Savage and Steamboat had already done it. Put simply, this match is the blueprint for great wrestling at Wrestlemania. Could anything else have been #1? A quick overall summary: This is the last of a series of articles I have written regarding Wrestlemania, this year and in general. If you missed any of my other ones, you can find them (including looking at the Lesnar vs Undertaker match and even prospectively approaching Undertaker vs Sting for next year in Santa Clara) on my profile so please take a look at those if you have the time. Thanks for reading this one and let me know if there's any you feel I've missed in the comments below and enjoy Wrestlemania XXX this Sunday. I'll be watching and I'll be back soon with more.
