Crash Holly was a prominent figure on WWE's lower midcard for the bulk of his career, but he had started to lose his way by 2002. A staple of the hardcore division, Crash was one of the last men to hold the belt prior to its unification with the Intercontinental Title in August, but had little success in the aftermath.

He was moved to SmackDown one month later, and while Crash was booked in a feud with Cruiserweight Champion Jamie Noble, he couldn't win the belt. A quick rivalry with Bill DeMott followed, but Crash was kept off television for four straight months afterwards. When he returned, Crash aligned with Shannon Moore as one of Matt Hardy's 'Mattitude Followers,' and spent the rest of his career working tag bouts.

Crash left the company that June, and signed with TNA the next month. He started working on the Canadian independent scene too, but sadly passed away in November 2003. The 22-time WWE Hardcore Champion was found dead at Stevie Richards' house in Florida, having committed suicide through a prescription drug overdose days after receiving divorce papers from his wife.
