Eddie Guerrero was less than three months into his WWE comeback in June 2002, and had spent that time feuding with Rob Van Dam and Steve Austin. He was sent to SmackDown in August, linking up with his nephew Chavo to form Los Guerreros, which birthed his famous "we lie, we cheat, we steal," slogan.

The duo's popularity started rising, with Eddie forging a particularly strong bond with the crowd. They eventually split in 2003, and after forming a brief team with Tajiri, Guerrero embarked upon a singles run. He became United States Champion later that year, and in 2004, he scored one of the most emotional WWE Championship victories of all time, pinning Brock Lesnar and No Way Out.

A feud with JBL followed, with Eddie eventually dropping the belt to Bradshaw at the 2004 Great American Bash. He remained a prominent figure on SmackDown, but tragedy robbed him of a second WWE Title run. Eddie was found unconscious in his hotel room on November 13, 2005, and was pronounced dead as soon as paramedics arrived on the scene. Heart failure took his life, and Guerrero remains one of the era's most beloved figures.
